Women’s march to rock Globes

IF you were expecting a gushy love-in at this year’s Golden Globes, forget it. Instead, you can look forward to a brazen feminist front where girl power will be loud, proud and undeniable. Tonight, Nicole Kidman, Reece Witherspoon, 41, right, and Eva Longoria, 42, left, are set to stage a protest on the red carpet in a united show of womanhood. I caught up with Nicole, 50, on Friday and she told me about the atmosphere in light of the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse scandal. She says: “It’s so important now that we are all together and that we are helping each other and that we can make change happen. That we can make this place a safer world for all of us and actually redefine how we look at abuse of power and what abuse is.”

Speaking at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, she told how playing a domestic abuse victim in Big Little Lies – for which she is nominated for Best Actress – was empowering.

She says: “Playing Celeste was a particular look at that, at domestic abuse. There has been a huge unravelling this year. We are all in a position to elicit change and we can all do it together.”

Women from across the industry will wear black and march down the red carpet tonight. Some of Hollywood’s leading ladies launched the Time’s Up initiative last week, a “legal defence fund” that aims to “provide subsidised legal support to those who have experienced sexual harassment, assault, or abuse in the workplace”. Nicole adds: “It’s about eradicating abuse for everybody right now and creating opportunities for women. I don’t know if it’s a march as much as solidarity. So many people are reaching out for help to be involved and raise money and for this place to be safer for all of us. The idea of women having each other’s backs is an important message.” While talent agency CAA has axed its party – with all donations going to a domestic abuse agency – there is still much to be celebrated. Empowered women, take note and party like your life depends on it.
