Follow three steps to boxing clever

-

Step One: If your window box has been used in the past, be sure to remove any remaining soil and debris still in it. Fresh soil is important for good plant growth, so remember to refresh it each year.

Before you start digging in, plan how you want everything arranged by lining up the plants in pots – ensuring you get a good variation of height and colour. Step Two: Get your window box up into position before you start filling it, as it will be very heavy and awkward to lift it up afterwards.

You can line the box with plastic so it’s easier to remove the soil each year – but remember to poke holes through the plastic for drainage. Then add your planting compost and fill to about an inch from the top. Step Three: Dig holes for your plants. You should be able to easily remove the plants from their pots with the soil attached by simply squeezing the pot slightly with one hand and pulling gently on the main stem.

Place your plants in the holes you dug earlier and press them into the surrounding compost. Water your plants in well and wipe down the outside of the box for any residual dirt and you’re all done. Don’t forget to water your plants during dry spells and use a fertiliser when necessary for an extra boost.

If you haven’t done one before, you’ll soon find out how easy it is to look after your winter window box, and how much of a difference it makes having a splash of colour nodding in the breeze right outside your window.

They’re so convenient to look after, and are a welcome addition to any space, large or small. So beat those winter blues today by sprucing up your windows with a lovely winter box.

It really can make all the difference.
