How do I tell hubby I’ve had it with IVF?

It’s your life. Except that you also share it with the man you love. Don’t let this process destroy what you love about each other. The desire to have a family can be equally strong for a man, but the infertility treatment isn’t. Studies show that going through fertility treatments is just as stressful as going through cancer treatments like radioand chemotherapy.

I hope you are under the care of a counsellor, with your IVF clinic. Make an appointment for you both and talk through your instinct now that you want to stop. They may be able to help you get that message to your husband loud and clear – and explore his true feelings too. Do you really know how disappointed he will be, or is he more likely to be upset for you? The counsellor may also be able to talk to you about options to try again one day, or find a family in another way.

If you’re not impressed with the clinic counselling service or they’re too expensive, find another.

Talk to your GP about getting counselling on the NHS, or the British Infertility Counselling Association has a directory of accredited therapists. You need expert help and lots of understanding.

I think your mum would be thrilled to walk you down the aisle but she may feel torn as you do – knowing that either or both of the two men will be hurt to be left out. Do the two men get on with each other? Can they at least be civil and dignified? If...
