TARTAN TRAUMA England were a ’Cutta shambles says Jones...and it’s all my fault

EDDIE JONES saw dismal England surrender the Calcutta Cup – then claimed the shambles was all his fault.

A ruck in the tunnel, a yellow card for Sam Underhill, some powder-puff defence, 13 penalties conceded and a lesson at the contact area, all added up to a desperate day for the English.

This was 1990 and 2000 rolled into one for the Scottish fans and boss Gregor Townsend, as no one had given his side a prayer.

And it felt like it was back to the dark days of the 2015 World Cup for England, who got schooled in every area.

Scotland fly-half Finn Russell was man of the match but it could have been any one of about half a dozen of the men in blue.

A dismal first half when England conceded three tries to trail by 16 points, 22-6, at half-time put the writing on the wall for Jones’s men before improving in the second half. Jones said: “My preparation was not good enough. I will have to have a look at how I prepare the team and work out how to do it better.

“I have got to take responsibility for the performance. These are lessons you don’t want to have but they are the best sort in the world. It is a great lesson for us.

“Scotland beat us at the breakdown and were able to cut holes in us and that was disappointing. I apologise for our performance.”

That is two defeats in 26 games under the Australian and England have never played as badly on his watch.

They did fight back in the second
