Poor Arsenal Gunner feel the backlash of raging bull Sergio

-

I PITY poor Arsenal in the League Cup final at Wembley today because Sergio Aguero will be simmering close to boiling point.

He may look like someone who takes everything in his stride, but I can tell you he will be quietly feeling something close to fury after what happened at Wigan this week.

Apart from everything else, he’s a centre-forward, and he missed chances he’d normally bury.

It happens all the time as a striker, far more often than fans ever remember, even to the best – but the best don’t let it happen twice in a row.

So there’s that. And the fact that Jesus is on his way back, with Pep Guardiola already showing he likes the movement of the Brazilian in his fluid line-up.

Competition can be a great motivator, because it can inspire driving feelings: anger, resentment, injustice.

He’s going to have a sense of injustice anyway, which is the biggest reason I think he’ll be bursting to score goals and be the main man if he starts at Wembley. I know, because I’ve been there myself.

What happened at Wigan where he was targeted by fans, was subjected to what looked like an assault, isn’t just unpleasant, it’s horrible.

It has no place in society never mind football, and how it was allowed to happen must be the subject of a serious inquiry by the FA.

I had it a couple of times in my career, incidents where I was singled out for a random assault because of who I was. I don’t want to dig over it, but the feelings you get when it comes out of nowhere, it makes you boil.

With me, I took it on to the pitch and wanted to use it. I think Aguero will be the same. He’ll be wondering why it was him, why he was singled out. He’ll also be thinking, ‘Right, I’ll make them pay’. I used to get so much stick from Everton fans, and a lot of it was good natured. I used to give it back in the same spirit, no problem. On that note, one of the funniest ‘attacks’ I had came in the UEFA Cup final against Alaves. I was warming up and a missile hit the ground hard next to me with a real thud. It could have brained me. I looked down, and it was, shall we say, an adult toy. So I flicked it up with my right foot, and volleyed it back with my left.

Some of it wasn’t though so funny though.

There was the snorting the grass incident, which has gone down in legend, where I let my feelings come out and got plenty of stick for it.

What people have forgotten about that game though, is I scored twice against Everton. I was motivated all right. Of course I was always motivated against Everton, they are such intense games. Yet I guess I was always extra-inspired because of some of what I felt was unfair and uncalled for attention.

So I know exactly what Aguero is feeling today. For a start, he’ll be desperate to play and desperate to score.

But it’s not exactly Nostradamus to suggest he will be a threat to Arsenal. It’s funny how that sense of injustice can just get you going, get the blood flowing.

I wasn’t bad though either – and I did score quite a few goals against Everton.

Maybe they should have been a bit nicer to me! home – except the weather of course. I don’t think I’d be sitting by the Mersey drinking a drop of red this afternoon somehow.

But cheers everyone, here’s to the Robbie Fowler Signature Series. A true top quality red!
