Why ‘Eye loved Jim & Doddy
It was a total joy to watch Channel4 news presenter Cathy Newman skewer Max Mosley for his racist past. He squirmed and stuttered and looked thoroughly uncomfortable on the giant hook she was dangling him from.
This week she turned her laser-like focus on ITN bosses for their disgraceful near 20 per cent gender pay gap.
With Cathy on the case, I reckon a few overpaid male newshounds might find their large salaries going walkies. Growing up in the 1970s and ‘80s, Ken Dodd and Jim Bowen were part of my childhood. I adored Doddy. His gentle jokes were safe enough for family viewing and his frizzy hair and goofy teeth made me feel like it was okay to be different. And as the wisecracking presenter of Bullseye, Jim Bowen was like the guy next door, just smarter and funnier. Just thinking about them makes me feel all warm and nostalgic. I’m not sure today’s kids will remember the X Factor judges with such respect and affection.
