GARETH SOUTHGATE has claimed Jake Livermore’s love for England could carry him all the way to Russia this summer.
Livermore was surprisingly included in Southgate’s latest squad to face Holland and Italy despite his Premier League struggles at basement club West Brom — and being implicated, with three other senior Baggies players, in the taxi scandal on a bonding trip to Barcelona last month.
But Southgate believes that Livermore’s commitment to the Three Lions deserves to be recognised — after the Albion midfielder ditched a family holiday flight at the airport to join the last squad as a late reserve. Southgate said: “It’s very straightforward for me. We’ve played Jake in several matches and he’s done a job for the team.
“In November, we left him out and he was just about to board a plane. He literally left the family at the airport.
“He came in, he did really well for us against Brazil and Germany, and I think that has to carry some weight when you are building the spirit and culture around your team.
“It doesn’t mean he is guaranteed to go in the summer, but I think it justifies him staying in our squad.
