in the process. Now he’s extending his stay to film Disney movie The One and Only Ivan – alongside Angelina Jolie and Sam Rockwell – at the world-famous Pinewood Studios. And that means more time enjoying London.

Cranston, 62, told the Sunday Mirror: “I love London. I walk everywhere here. I walk for miles and miles. I do wear a little cap and some glasses because I’d rather observe.

“The job of an actor is to observe human behaviour and be able to recreate that but when the observer becomes observed everything stops and the behaviour changes and there’s too much attention on me.

“I get enough attention, so I like to hide out and observe and be unnoticed.”

He loves British food and when asked if he is particular­ly enjoying tea and fish and chips, he replies in a clipped English accent: “Of course I am, darling!”

Cranston recalls his first UK trip 35 years ago when he says standard fare was “a little pub grub and Indian food”.

Now, he says of the nosh on offer in London: “It’s some of the best in the world and I don’t know how or why it changed but it is extraordin­ary and so you can go just about anywhere.”

While our food might tickle his fancy, the actor admits knowing virtually nothing of other modern-day British institutio­ns – like Coronation Street, EastEnders or any of our beloved TV soaps. “You mean like washing soaps?” he jokes. He also reveals that despite being a star of screens big and small he has little time for watching TV himself.

And like his character Howard Beale in Network, he has a sceptical view of modern broadcasti­ng.

Cranston, who found fame as dad Hal in TV comedy Malcolm in the Middle, explained: “I don’t even watch American television – I have no time.

“We are looking at news as a way to wrap entertainm­ent and promote other things as opposed to relaying what happened that day.

“Now it’s hard to find something that is non-opinionate­d and just exactly what happened. You have to be very careful these days, so when my character Howard Beale
