Red-hot Grigg pulls the trigger – and sparks title winners party for Wigan

- By LIZ BYRNES at the Keepmoat Stadium

WILL GRIGG scored the only goal as Wigan won the League One title with a narrow victory in the glorious sunshine at the Keepmoat.

Grigg sprung the offside trap on 75 minutes as he gathered Nick Powell’s through ball and moved in on goal where he calmly slotted the ball across goalkeeper Marko Marosi and into the bottom corner.

It sparked jubilation at the away end with some fans on the pitch, blue flares lit and a deafening rendition of “Will Grigg’s On Fire”. Rovers had produced a solid defensive display until the striker got his 19th league goal of the season.

Earlier, Grigg had come closest for the Latics with a turn and shot at the end of the first half with Gavin Massey and Sam Morsy also on target.

While they only needed to avoid defeat to secure the title on goal difference, it brought down the curtain on a memorable campaign that also took in a run to the FA Cup quarter-finals with a famous victory over Premier League champions Manchester City along the way.

For manager Paul Cook it was another personal triumph as he claimed his second successive promotion/title, 12 months after guiding Portsmouth to the League Two title.

Having also led Chesterfield – who have tumbled out of the Football League – to the League Two summit in 2014 followed by the League One play-offs the following season, it is easy to see why the 51-year-old is hot property.

Cook has been linked with Sunderland and Ipswich but he is reportedly on the verge of signing a new deal at the DW Stadium and happy to remain in his native North West. Wigan fans will hope so after Cook stated his intention to remain at Portsmouth after promotion before making an about-turn after new owners took over and headed to Wigan.

The former Latics midfielder is already looking forward to managing in the Championship for the first time, Wigan seeking to at least consolidate after yo-yoing between League One and the second tier in recent years.
