Craig, who has a six-year-old son with Susan, 46, also admits to turning down some acting jobs so he can spend more quality time with his family.

“We try to take it in turns [with jobs] but it doesn’t always work like that,” he says. “It’s getting increasing­ly hard.”

Craig’s iconic character was killed off in series three of Line of Duty, but made a dying declaratio­n that could be key to the plot of the next series.

His latest project is the hard-hitting drama Killed by My Debt, which is available to view on BBC3 from Tuesday.

It follows the tragic story of Jerome Rogers, a bike courier who took his own life after two parking fines he got spiralled, leaving him more than £1,000 in debt.

Craig plays Ross Cutler, a bailiff who knocks on the 20-year-old’s door.

I did adverts for Pringles and Sunny Delight. I was in the background on Live and Kicking during Zoe Ball’s last show and in EastEnders, eating crisps at Sonia’s 13th birthday.

There isn’t one at the moment. I’m taking some time off after theatre. I’ve started writing and I’m enjoying that.
