NIGEL THOMPSON MARJORIE YUE Your turtle guide to saving these babies

- BY NIGEL THOMPSON

Sea turtles are in the middle of their peak nesting season and British holidaymakers are being asked to play their part in keeping hatchlings happy.

Travel giant TUI’s Care Foundation has launched a global Turtle Aid programme aimed at saving one million of the often critically endangered reptiles by 2020.

It’s working in partnership with local organisations in Greece, Cape Verde and Turkey.

Tens of thousands of baby turtles will be making the desperate scramble across holiday resort sands to the relative sanctuary of the sea this summer.

And travellers are being asked to watch out for nests, little ones on the move and to follow these tips:

If you stay near the beach, turn off lights and draw blinds at night.

Keep your distance from hatchlings and nesting turtles. Ask a local turtle watch group about walks to see nests safely. Put away beach chairs and toys etc. If you dig a hole or make a sandcastle, fill it in or knock it down before you go to clear a path. Don’t leave litter or release balloons and lanterns. Marine wildlife experts say typically only one in 1,000 baby turtles survive to adulthood under natural conditions. And, as if their chances were not limited enough, deadly man-made threats include suffocation by plastic bags, poaching, illegal trading and irresponsible beach use leading to the destruction of nests.

Initiatives in TUI’s programme will also see relocation of failed nests into hatcheries, rehabilitation of sick turtles, and school programmes.

Hotel partners will be involved, and tour guides taught about best practices on turtle watching excursions and responsible beach use.

TUI plans to extend the project later in 2018 and launch new activities. See tuicarefoundation.com/en canadianaffair.com Regenerate Advanced Foaming Mouthwash, Boots stores, £10
