BOJO IS A NO GO

May rumoured to want election

- BY NIGEL NELSON Political Editor

IT’S only a mile from the Tory conference, but these scenes of people getting food handouts yesterday are a world away from Theresa May’s millionaires.

For the past two years Courtney Dawes, 23, and Luke Bisted, 26 have been handing free meals to the homeless. They were inspired to act after they heard about a man who had died from the cold. TORY MPs will tell Theresa May this week they will oust her if she tries to force a General Election to save her skin.

But Boris Johnson’s hopes of replacing her are fast slipping away.

As Tories gathered for the Birmingham conference last night, rumours spread of a possible snap November poll.

No 10 rubbished this, but if the PM’s Chequers Brexit plan is sunk in the Commons she will have to resign or call an election in a bid to restore her authority.

Many Tories are terrified that could let Jeremy Corbyn in. They will warn Mrs May such a decision will trigger the remaining 48 letters from MPs needed for a no confi- dence vote. It is believed 40 are already in. One Tory MP said: “There’s no way we’re going to the ballot box again with her in charge.”

Mr Johnson will make his pitch for the leadership at a rally on Tuesday. A source close to the former Foreign Secretary says he is gaining Cabinet support for his plan to replace the Chequers proposals with the kind of EU trade deal Canada has negotiated.

Mr Johnson will say it will make us a “global Britain” prospering from trade with the EU, US, Asia, China, Australia and New Zealand.

The source said: “Cabinet ministers are now so frightened of no deal they are pushing for Canada.”

But that does not mean they want Mr Johnson to lead them. A Cabinet source said: “Boris is a knob. He’s played at being Foreign Secretary and made offensive remarks about the burka. He’s also lazy. Foreign Office officials say they can no longer go home early under Jeremy Hunt.” It’s doubtful he’d get enough support in a contest, leaving Environment Secretary Michael Gove as favourite. nigel.nelson@sundaymirror.
