Dangers of drop for northern trio

- BRIAN McNALLY

THE spectre of relegation hangs heavily over the three northern Premier League outfits in action today and tomorrow.

Huddersfield, who face Wolves this afternoon, have so far looked a shadow of the spirited side who valiantly beat the drop last term. I genuinely fear for them.

Surprise strugglers Burnley host a decidedly moderate Newcastle team – rejuvenated by successive home wins – on Monday.

This is a massive game psychologically for both clubs.

Defeat in this clash would be a moralesapping blow for either side.

Sean Dyche’s (inset, top) incredible feat in finishing seventh last term and making the Europa League qualifiers rebounded on his side big time early on.

The Europa League exit was probably a blessing in disguise.

Burnley, like Huddersfield, spent heavily in the summer transfer window with net outlay close to £30million.

Both their investments have yet to produce any real return.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez (inset, bottom) by stark contrast was frustrated by owner Mike Ashley’s transfer policy and actually made a net profit of circa £28m.

Injuries blighted on-loan Salomon Rondon’s Toon start. But Newcastle now have more potency, with his powerful presence up front providing a muchneeded focal point.

Burnley aim to repeat last term’s 1-0 home win over the Toon. But I think Newcastle are capable of snatching a point.

An alarming lack of goals is the chief reason Huddersfield are in the drop zone.

Town’s total of six from 12 League games is the worst in the division.

Boss David Wagner (left) must find an answer quickly, if relegation is to be avoided.

The tricky trip to Molineux looks unlikely to end their winless run on the road.

But Warner’s team have overcome adversity before and must take heart from a haul of four points from their last two games.

Last season the relegation battle went down almost to the wire. So it’s way too soon to call this term’s.

But I’ve got to admit I’ll be pleasantly surprised if all three northern strugglers beat the drop.
