MPs call to grill Green on ‘sleaze’

WHEN BHS collapsed in 2016, 11,000 jobs disappeared and a £571million void was left in its pension. It was devastating.

A report found Sir Philip Green had extracted large sums from the ailing firm.

The MPs who wrote it said Green had left the High Street stalwart on “life support.”

Later, he agreed a cash settlement to plug the gap. But even that gesture could not recover his tattered reputation.

Green became a byword for corporate greed. He was branded “the unacceptable face of capitalism.”

And one Labour MP called him a “billionaire spiv.” Now we are beginning to learn more about him as a person.

Since an injunction against the Telegraph was abandoned claims about his alleged behaviour have emerged.

It has been reported a senior female member of staff was paid £1million to sign a gagging order and a black male executive signed a NDA after Sir Philip said he was “throwing spears in the jungle”.

The Topshop boss denies allegations he behaved wrongly. Over the coming weeks more details will emerge.

In the meantime, MPs are set to demand Mr Green returns to Parliament to explain himself.

They will not only ask about his alleged treatment of workers. But also on the agenda will be his use of gagging orders.

It’s important that when Parliament calls, Sir Philip answers.

His dignity and reputation is in tatters. We hope he will use whatever honour he has left to face his responsibilities.
