It also helped to keep the barbecue fired up every evening as we dined alfresco – everyone else had the same idea in the glorious sunshine.

We left the premises behind to spend a day at Les Sables d’Olonne, which was a highlight of the trip.
There is parking on the seafront and a long p romenade for walking and biking.
The beautiful sandy beaches and clear shallow waters were ideal for children – our two loved exploring the rock pools.
Both kids also enjoyed a turn on our bodyboard in the surf and you could rent full boards or book a surf lesson for extra adrenaline.

After various hapless sandcastle attempts, mussels and chips for lunch at L’Aiglon really hit the spot.
An afternoon session back on the sand teed up a crepe before we head back to Le Pin Parasol which is just 30 minutes away.
The trip wasn’t totally without incident – I stupidly binned the motorway toll card along with a sea of rubbish from the car and we got charged all the way from Calais, not Caen.
So keep yours in a safe place.
But as we headed home we all agreed it was a case of à bientôt not au revoir.
