Be a fly baby

- BY JanE MEMMlEr

Time for the great family getaway – and for those flying with a newborn for the first time, the experience might prove completely daunting. Research by The Baby Show has revealed that a third of new parents have decided not to travel far from home. The most popular distance is around three to four hours.

Only 14 per cent of those surveyed say they would fly for five to eight hours. However, they are concerned about their baby being loud on a flight (28 per cent), while 21 per cent believe the new environment will stress out their little one. A small number (6 per cent) say they would never travel with a baby.

Lucy Shrimpton, The Sleep Nanny at The Baby Show, says: “I urge parents to be confident in their ability to deal with their little ones. Just go for it.” Here are her best tips:

No rules apply: Sticking to your normal routine is impossible, so don’t stress. The general motion of travel will naturally lull you to sleep.

Adapt to local time: Get into the rhythm of the day with correct meal times and bedtimes, your little one will adjust more quickly.

Don’t be afraid to travel with newborns: Babies under three months can be easy because they sleep a lot. Feeding them during take-off and landing can also ease earache.

Create a familiar environment: Bring things from home with a familiar scent, such as a pillowcase.

Adopt a holiday routine: Don’t fret being out of your normal routine, but try to keep to their usual sleeping pattern, even if it means settling them in a pushchair while out to dinner.

Prepare for the weather: Your little one might find the change in climate challenging, so pack well. The right food and drink can help regulate body temperature.
