Single Woodward col headlinehas smell of success style here

- BY StEVE BAtES

MANCHESTER UNITED fans wanting to see the back of board supremo Ed Woodward are in for a long wait.

Despite United stumbling into the new season with just one win in four Premier League games, Woodward’s stock is higher than ever with the Glazer family (above), who own United.

And unless Woodward himself decides his work is done, the Glazers are happy to see the club’s executive vice-chairman stay at the helm.

That’s because United are still making money for the Glazers who were happy with Woodward’s performance in the summer window.

United made three big buys – in £80million Harry Maguire, £49.5m Aaron Wan-Bissaka and £15.3m winger Daniel James – for a total outlay of £144.8m.

Woodward cleared out Romelu Lukaku for £73.8m and Matteo Darmian for £3.4m.

He also stood firm on Ander Herrera’s demand for £200,000 a week before the Spaniard left for Paris Saint-Germain.

And United’s head suit managed to loan out Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling, saving United a total of £26.1m off their annual player salary bill.

The £77.2m banked for selling Lukaku and Darmian takes United’s overall outlay on new players to just £67.6m.

The Glazers didn’t want Paul Pogba to leave – and he didn’t after Woodward make it clear he wasn’t for sale.

United have slashed their managerial wage bill, too, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on £6.5m a year, less than half of Jose Mourinho’s deal.

The figures have left Woodward smelling of roses in the eyes of the Glazers – even if United aren’t performing with distinction on the pitch.
