UNBREAKABLE FRIENDSHIP

anything. We interviewed her then went straight out there to pursue the story. It was one of those lifechanging moments.”

“It was extraordinary,” adds Ben. “You’re processing what the story is while you’re trying to do something else at the same time and also talk – that’s the skill.

“That’s what I admire so much about Kate. She’s so incisive in those moments. She’s incredibly intelligent, bright and insightful as well. I can learn from her and get a bit of reflected glory.

“The co-host thing is a really difficult chemistry to get right. Finding someone who has become a friend that you can work with is special.

“I know if I’ve dropped the ball somehow, Kate is going to grab it. She’s so quick at picking up what’s going on. And equally, I can catch the ball from her. It’s about instinct and about trusting that person.”

Kate returns the compliments. “The thing about Ben is, everyone is better around him,” she says. “This is why I’m so lucky. He just makes guests look brilliant, the co-presenters look brilliant.”

She tells him: “You’re always very funny and think of the punchline... but always let other people say it.”

Ben jokes: “That’s really interesting because my wife says she’s better when I’m there!”

He adds: “Being able to laugh at yourself is so important. You get caught up in the fact that we are hosting a national breakfast show. There are some serious themes throughout the show but, equally, we are human and I think there are very few people who can connect like that.

“It’s an absolute skill and in our case I’ve learned that from Kate.

He adds: “She has always been up for giving something a go and has a great sense of the comedy with a story. People can watch it and understand something might happen they don’t expect.”

As Kate and Ben compete to share the most comical and momentous moments of their TV careers, it’s clear the bond that makes them one of the nations favourite television duos is also the glue that cements their long friendship.
