Warning over tinned drinks with more sugar than a doughnut

- BY DOMINIK LEMANSKI AND STEPHEN HAYWARD

THE subjects are iconic, yet these 56-year-old snaps of the Rolling Stones have never been seen before.

Charting their first tour and recording session, they show them pooling cash for a cab to London’s De Lane Lea Studios, and in candid backstage shots.

They go on show in November at The Curtain hotel in Shoreditch. Lucky they didn’t fade away. COSTA has been accused of misleading people by claiming its canned coffee is healthier than rivals.

Each tin has up to 9.8g of sugar – almost a third of the 30g daily limit for adults recommended by the NHS.

That is more than a McDonald’s chocolate doughnut, which has 9.2g.

The chilled drinks come in three flavours, Classic Latte, with 9.8g of sugar per 250ml can, Caramel Latte, with 9g, and Black Americano with 4.3g.

A message on the tins reads: “30 per cent less sugar versus most RTD [ ready to drink] coffee drinks in GB.”

Paul Evans, of the British Obesity Society, said: “By promoting these new canned drinks as 30 per cent less sugar, Costa Coffee are misleading their customers into thinking their drinks are healthier than they actually are. Consumers should be aware there is nothing low-sugar or healthy about these products.”

Mick Armstrong, of the British Dental Association, said: “Guzzling these drinks will do your teeth no favours.”

Campaigners want the Government to extend the sugar tax on fizzy drinks to milk-based ones in the battle against obesity.

Latest official figures show more than 28 per cent of UK adults are now obese – up from 24 per cent a decade ago. Coca- Cola – which bought Costa in a £3.9billion deal last year – said: “The new range contains 30 per cent less sugar versus most ready to drink coffee drinks sold in Britain, with between 15 and 108 calories per can.

“All three variants contain less than five per cent of a person’s recommended daily calorie intake.”
