Have yourself a royal old time out in Africa

- BY jane memmler

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will embark on their 10-day royal tour of Africa tomorrow. They’ll be visiting Cape Town before Harry leaves for Botswana, Angola and Malawi. They’ll be reunited in Johannesburg. Should they have any downtime, here are our suggestions…

CAPE TOWN

Trendy neighbourhoods: Gardens, De Waterkant and Bo-Kaap for cafés and colourful houses.

For cool bars: Clifton and Camps Bay are home to trendy restaurants and cocktail bars and overlook beaches of white sand. For gourmets: Constantia, the foodie capital of SA, with sprawling vineyards. V&A Waterfront: For boats to Robben Island, a huge array of restaurants, and fashion and souvenir shopping. Woodstock: Designer shops and galleries make up the artsy suburb of Woodstock, a hub for Cape Town’s creative set.

BOTSWANA

Home to incredible parks, the most famous is the Okavango Delta, a floodplain of islands and waterways.

For prolific big game: The Kalahari Desert is a vast basin which covers most of Botswana; the Khama Rhino Sanctuary for the protection of rhinos; and Chobe National Park, home to elephants where Harry will dedicate an area to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy.

JOHANNESBURG

South Africa’s vibrant commercial hub. Downtown: For old warehouses, and traditional Victorian shopfronts. Soweto: The home of Nelson Mandela, and also Archbishop Desmond Tutu (who the couple will meet) for a township tour. Maboneng: Funky artist suburb with boutique hotels, murals, al fresco restaurants and bars. Apartheid Museum: A poignant, often haunting, chronicle of the anti-apartheid struggle.

MALAWI

Liwonde National Park: Covering more than 200 square miles, the reserve offers spectacular game viewing and is home to Malawi’s largest population of elephants.
