Meghan’s tribute to girl who was raped and killed She ties ribbon at death scene
The message said Meghan had c a r r ied out private visits in South Africa over the past two days to “deepen her understanding” of the current situation.
One meeting was with women’s leaders who are striving for gender equality.
The Duchess said: “I have been so moved by what I have heard. The leadership and strength shown by these women is remarkable.
“The issue of gender and gender-based violence is at the forefront of people’s minds. I hope their voices will resonate and not only give comfort but create change.
“This is a global problem that can only find solution with the attention and work of everyone, regardless of gender, status, politics, race or nationality.”
It was later confirmed that Meghan, using a ribbon from a gift she received in Cape Town, wrote the tribute to Uyinene before visiting the memorial. Wearing blue jeans and a cream tunic top with ruffled straps, she tied the ribbon to a fence alongside other multi-coloured streamers in tribute to the teenager, known as Nene.
Celeste Fortuin, who was paying tribute herself, said Meghan’s gesture meant a lot to the community.
She said: “It’s a very personal statement, to say that she understands what happened. She is a woman and for me to see her tying the ribbon there says that, you know, she gets it.”
A 42-year-old male post office employee has been arrested over the killing.
