There’s a feast in the East for culture fans

- BY nigel thompson

Eastern Europe offers the best value city breaks for culture vultures this autumn. Brits looking to take in museums, art galleries and heritage sites without blowing their budget should head to capital cities Budapest , Prague or Warsaw.

Researchers found the Hungarian, Czech and Polish trio led the way for value when they compared the total costs of admission to cultural attractions, with a ticket for the opera, dance and classical music concerts.

For example, in Budapest the opera is just £18. In Milan it is £199.

The annual Cost of Culture Report from Post Office Travel Money found six typical cultural fees in Budapest would total £70 per person, ahead of Prague (£102) and Warsaw (£105).

Sweden may be seen as expensive but Stockholm was fourth at £159, with Russian capital Moscow just £2 more thanks to a fall in prices for the Bolshoi Ballet.

Despite 24 per cent local price rises, Dublin retained its position as the cheapest eurozone city, and at £173 its cultural highlights are below half the price of those in Milan (£377) and Madrid , the most costly in the study at £430.

London’s 7.8 per cent increase in costs pushed the total to £288, but across the Pond it’s top dollar in New York City at £418, the second most costly after the Spanish capital.

A Post Office Travel Money spokesman said: “Two-in-five holidaymakers planning city breaks told us that cultural attractions are a key consideration when choosing where to go, but more than three-quarters said they are concerned about the costs they will face.

‘’If you choose a pricier city over a cheaper one, there are still ways to keep the cost of culture down.

‘’Buy tickets direct rather than via a ticket agency to avoid commission, seek advice on cheaper seats still offering good views and look for free entry days at museums or gallery or times when prices are lower.”
