Wallonia here for the beer
invading forces, and is an amazing place to explore still today. This medieval fortress contains more than five miles of underground passages and gardens, and has amazing views.
Beyond are the forests of the Ardennes, the scene of many of the most famous bloody battles of both world wars.
Many people, including descendants of those killed in the trenches, visit Belgium to explore the battlefields.
Mons, further north and just across the border from France, is a place of incredible importance from the First World War. It was here, in August 1914, that the British first encountered the Germans, and more than four years later it was just nearby that the final soldier died before the Armistice.
In the cemetery of St Symphorien, John Parr, the first Commonwealth casualty, and George Price, the last, are buried.
Liege, to the east, is just as rewarding as Namur, and well worth spending a few days in too. It has plenty to offer, including the palace of the PrinceBishops of Liège, the cathedral with its treasury, many good museums and the Carre historic, cobbled city centre.
Cheers to a great few days.
