Guardiola: Title race is not over

-

Guardiola refused to write off his side’s chances after they were held 2-2 at Newcastle.

He said: “It’s not a good idea to think about the league or how many points.

“Just win games and, if we don’t win, it will be more difficult.”

Despite keeper Alisson’s red card that will see him banned for Wednesday’s Merseyside derby with Everton, Liverpool equalled their longest-ever unbeaten run – set in the top-flight in 1987-88 – after extending it to 31 games.

Two-goal hero Van Dijk said: “We played a few days ago, so energy is always a little bit less than usual if you have a full week to prepare.

“But we have to deal with it and manage the game a little bit better.

“We could have done that better, but we won – and that’s the most important thing.”

Their latest win gave them clear daylight at the summit, although

Leicester can cut Liverpool’s lead to eight points with a win over Everton today.

Speaking about his team’s less than comfortable display towards the end of the match, Klopp said: “It was unnecessary, of course, because we had unbelievable chances.

“Their keeper made some good saves.

“It was difficult this game because Brighton are a good football side. They had a lot of possession and we had to work really hard.

“I loved that the boys were prepared to do that after a busy week.”

And on winning the title, he added: “We don’t think about these things. It was just to win this game.

“We have one more day between now and the next game, so we have to use that and then we try again.

“The boys threw everything on the pitch. It’s unbelievable how much they want to win. It was a really special win.”
