Reflections on a year gone by and the one to come

-

Kevin, right, with his brother Ian

The New Year is almost here... that time after the non-stop days of Christmas to reflect on the year gone by and look back to see what I enjoyed, what I did that made a positive difference to others and what, perhaps, I am less proud of.

I believe I made a big contribution to my favourite charity, Prostate Cancer UK, by raising thousands of pounds and talking about health in general. I think of my work colleagues at RBS who, with my encouragement, took on massive challenges for charity and are rightly proud of what they achieved.

I am also hard on myself and wonder if I could have pushed myself more in a race that I never finished, called that friend I never did or gone to an event where I turned down the opportunity to speak because I was busy.

These are all things that I will try to do better next year.

But finally, the things

I’ve loved – seeing my daughter Hayley graduate from university, my son Ben get a good job, my other son Ollie love being in the Scouts, and sharing family time together.

I managed to run in some amazing places with new friends and have memories that will never leave me – especially the magical month I spent walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain with my brother Ian. It was priceless time spent together inspired by our late father.

The fear of a short prognosis hangs over me always, but I’ve not let that get me down.

I hope you too can look at last year through a similar lens, rejoice in the good and aim to do better next time.

I look back to see what I enjoyed – what I did that made a positive difference to others...
