SWANS AIM FOR ‘EL TAFFICO’ DOUBLE

- BY GRAHAM THOMAS

MATT GRIMES insists Swansea City can bin a century of Welsh derby history today by rubbishing theories about a Cardiff revival.

Neither Welsh club has won both league games in the same season in 108 years of ‘El Taffico’.

But the Swans skipper is in confident mood against a Bluebirds team whose upturn under Neil Harris has been undermined by one league win in their last six matches. “I don’t want to jinx it or put any added pressure on, but I think, with the form we are in at the minute and the way we have been playing, we will go into the game full of confidence,” said Grimes.

“If we implement what we have been working on all week, there’s no reason why we can’t win.

“To do the double would be fantastic, but we must not think about that too much. We have just got to focus on playing our game and bringing our best on Sunday.”

The Swans won this season’s first derby 1-0 in October, but were so dominant the only question was why they didn’t score more.

Their inconsistency may have caused them to drift from the top spot occupied early in the season, but they are still in the play-off hunt and they will be buoyed by an injection of youth.

Liverpool striker Rhian Brewster and Chelsea defender Marc Guehi have both arrived on loan this week – renewing acquaintances with manager Steve Cooper who was their England Under-17 boss two years ago.

Both are likely to start on the bench, but Grimes added: “Any signings give the squad a lift, but these are two very highly rated youngsters coming here to develop and impress under a very good head coach.”
