Reds kid’s Tranmere nightmare
CAMERON BORTHWICKJACKSON could be set for a nightmare return to Prenton Park if League
One Tranmere Rovers land the dream FA Cup tie with Manchester United.
The 22-year-old United full-back joined Micky Mellon’s side on loan at the beginning of the season, but only made six appearances and last week Reds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recalled him.
It was a decision celebrated by many Tranmere fans, who then trolled the defender on social media.
“A total waste of time”, “Poor attitude. Did nothing to encourage us to take overpaid Premier League players on loan” and “Absolute shocker” were three of the observations on his underwhelming time on the Wirral.
And now those fans could be seeing BorthwickJackson, who has made 14 senior United appearances and was named the club’s Under-21 player of the year in 2016, back at Prenton Park later in the month.
Solskjaer aims to give the defender, who has also been on loan at Wolves and Scunthorpe, playing time after his squad was hit by injuries.
So if United beat Wolves in their third-round replay this week and Tranmere see off Premier League Watford on home soil on Tuesday night, they will face each other at Prenton Park in a televised fourthround encounter.
Borthwick-Jackson was not involved last Saturday as Tranmere came back from 3-0 down to stun Watford and dramatically force a replay.
Mellon now wants some of the same fighting spirit when Nigel Pearson brings his side to the North West.
He certainly does not want a repeat of last season when Spurs thumped his side 7-0 in the FA Cup third round.
He said: “Usually, in games against the big clubs, Tranmere have a proud history of competing. Hopefully, it’s another great night.”
