says he’ll bring back another series of Mrs Brown’s Boys – but only if the BBC flashes the cash.
The Irish comic previously dashed hopes of a fifth series, but now he admits he could be talked around – if BBC executives come up with “phone number” money figures.
“You know, money is green,” confesses Brendan, who plays Agnes Brown. “I would never say never. If the right phone number comes up, I’m your man.”
Mrs Brown’s Boys scooped its fifth National Television Award for Best Comedy earlier this week. Some people were surprised it beat Fleabag and Ricky Gervais’s Netflix comedy After Life or Derry Girls, but the public vote shows just how much it’s loved.
Enjoying success with festive specials in recent years, the cast are currently on a UK tour.
Brendan, 64, says he will always be grateful for the Beeb’s faith in backing his vision for the series from the stage to the screen.
He told Los Angeles’ TCA event: “When we were planning to do it, I said, ‘Look if there’s any mistakes, leave them in. Let me play with them.’ And they said, ‘Brendan, I suggest the sitcom format was invented for a reason’. I said, ‘Yeah, let’s break it.’
“We let the audience know that we know – it’s a wink to the audience. We know that you know it’s in a studio. And we know that you know it’s a man in a dress. So it’s kind of a nod to the audience that we’re not undermining their integrity.”
The entire cast will hit the road with a musical version of Mrs Brown Rides Again tour next summer in the UK before heading off around the world.
Brendan jokes about his success, saying: “Listen, Mrs Brown’s Boys is the number one comedy in Jamaica. Really? People need to get out more.”
