Couple facing the mother of all challenges

- GRACE MacASKILL Feature writer and mum of two

THEY may have weathered the storms of Brexit and the General Election, but Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds have no idea what’s about to hit them.

A first-time baby for Carrie will make the EU exit look like a storm in a Tommee Tippee cup.

And while he might be PM, Boris will no longer be the centre of Carrie’s world. That affected littleboy-lost act will cut no swathe with her once a mini-Boris arrives.

Nights out will give way to nappies. Romantic walks will just be a way to get the baby to sleep.

Boris already has children — although how many is open to debate — and is no spring chicken.

My husband Jamie and I had kids in our late 30s. And when I watch my sister, 15 years younger than me, with her two, I realise how much more energy she has.

With equally demanding jobs, Jamie and I are both utterly exhausted by the end of the week. Imagine running the country.

I fear Carrie will fly solo on the night feeds which, as any mother knows, can foster resentment.

But, before all that, she has to get through the pregnancy in the glare of the public eye. Most of us spend the first trimester throwing up, blossom in the second, then feel wiped out in the third.

There are hormones flying all over the place. You want to be told you’re beautiful, even when you look like the back end of a bus and your face has more eruptions than Prime Minister’s questions.

So the couple are in for a rough ride, but it will all be worth it when Carrie holds that little bundle in her arms for the first time.

Just one thing. Who is going to tell Dilyn the dog?
