Becker: Klopp’s destiny is to be Germany manager
TENNIS legend Boris Becker knows a champion when he sees one – and the three-time king of Wimbledon believes it is Jurgen Klopp’s destiny to eventually become Germany boss.
Becker, 52, a footballer lover and fan of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, reckons the Liverpool manager will return home one day to take charge of his nation.
But the good news for the Kop is that Becker reckons Klopp still has unfinished business at Anfield – and the 52-year-old is still too young to contemplate a switch to international football.
Becker (above) said: “I would like Jurgen to come home to manage Germany one day – and I’m not the only one.
“I think he would be a great coach for our country because he is someone who really gets his ideas across to his players and who makes them buy in to what he’s attempting to do.
“Every German football fan is impressed with the job Klopp is doing at Liverpool.
“To see a German coach win the Champions League with one of England’s most famous clubs and now get so close to winning the Premier League as well is fantastic.
“Klopp has made one of the world’s biggest clubs great again and I really hope that it’s his destiny to manage Germany.
“But maybe that is a long time in the future. Jurgen is still quite young and I think he has the hunger to win many more trophies with Liverpool before going into international football.
“Hopefully, when he has achieved all he wants in club football, that will be the time he comes home.”
Klopp won two Bundesliga titles with
Borussia Dortmund and also took the German club to the 2013 Champions League final. Bayern legend Franz Beckenbauer (below) identified him as the perfect Bayern coach just days before he guided Liverpool to the Champions League last June.
That stance will have been strengthened by the sight of the
Reds sitting 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League before the coronavirus crisis struck, with Liverpool just two wins away from the club’s first title in 30 years.
Becker, who was speaking in his role as an ambassador for the Laureus Sports Awards, said: “I have loved seeing what Jurgen is doing at Liverpool.
“I am a big fan, I admire him a lot and I think it’s amazing what he has achieved in England already.
“Liverpool have made the Premier League a one-team championship this season and to have another successful year after winning the Champions League is a sign of what a great manager Klopp is.”
Becker added: “I am not surprised that Franz Beckenbaeur said Klopp would be the perfect Bayern manager.
“But, at the moment, Jurgen looks to have found a home he is happy in with Liverpool.
“The best managers don’t just win one big trophy – they get better and more successful every year.
“I like very much the way Klopp has stamped his personality on Liverpool. That isn’t easy to do at a big club, but the team has his clear signature.
“He did it at Dortmund and now he’s done it at Liverpool – and that’s the sign of a great manager.
“I don’t think he has ever been sacked – which is another tribute to his quality.”
