Golfers raise cash for Willie Thorne

Cancer-hit snooker star helped by pals

IT’S either a very tiny baby… or one giant sized pasty. Proud Cornish dad Tim Fuge cooked up the traditional treat the exact weight and size of his newborn son.

The 6.4lb snack is a foot-and-a-half long – just like two-week-old Jowan.

Dad-of-three Tim, 33, of Liskeard, said the trickiest part was finding a baking tray big enough to cook the 4,000 calorie feast.

He said: “I only managed to eat half at lunch, and the rest this morning. I’m stuffed.”

A STRING of top sportsmen have helped rack up thousands of pounds for cancer-hit snooker star Willie Thorne.

Pals of Willie, 66, are aiming to raise £26,000 to help fund a carer and other medical costs as he fights leukaemia.

So far golfers including Ian Poulter, Paul McGinley, Francesco Molinari and Danny Willett have chipped in.

Longtime snooker buddy John Virgo has contributed too, while another golf star, Mark Roe, helps run the gofundme appeal.

Willie, who fought gambling addiction and at one point owed £1million, is having chemotherapy in

Spain, where he now lives. He also has severe gout in his left knee, so cannot walk. His carer Julie O’Neill said: “Willie makes his money through appearances and commentating which has, for obvious reasons, had to stop.

“He isn’t entitled to any relief over here, so he is in a very vulnerable situation where money is nearly depleted. What happens when he can no longer pay? He needs to be able to pay the carer, rent, bills, food.

“He may need lifts to and from the hospital for chemo, someone to translate so he can understand what the professionals are telling him, or just a warm meal in his belly. Surely he can’t be left with nothing?”

Willie moved to Villamartin on the Costa Blanca two years ago to help arrange celebrity golf events. He split from wife Jill, 60, last year after his money problems took a toll.

A friend said Willie’s family in the UK were “seriously worried” and offering what support they could. So far the appeal has raised over £6,600.

Carer Julie thanked Mark Roe for his input and added: “All funds collected will be managed independently. Please help us give ‘Big Willie’ the comfort he needs to fight on.”
