NEIL YOUNG AND BOB DYLAN

-

songwriter Pegi Young and had two more children, Ben and Amber.

Pegi died last year. Carrie stayed unlucky in love and died while awaiting a liver transplant in 2004. Before her death she still looked back ruefully on her life with the enigmatic Neil, now married to Kill Bill actor Daryl Hannah, 59.

“It was like heaven on that ranch,” said

Carrie. “I don’t know why we broke up. We never fought.”

His album Homegrown feels like a late tribute to the woman who inspired such beautiful songs. On track Separate Ways he sings “I’m feeling better now/ A bit more alive, somehow,” as though he’s trying to convince himself that it’s true.

His inner turmoil shows on the stunning Kansas, in which he awakes “from a bad dream” next to a woman surrounded by the walls of “my bungalow of stucco that the glory and success bought”.

His pal Dylan has had an equally turbulent love life. The star left folk singer Joan Baez for married Sara Lownds, a former Playboy bunny and model, in 1964 – tying the knot a year later. They

William Shakespeare, war diarist Anne Frank and Indiana Jones all feature in Bob’s new album had four children. In 1973, they moved to California but broke up after fights over a household renovation. While Young shelved his album of heartbreak songs in 1975, Dylan released his – Blood On The Tracks – the same year.

He secretly married singer Carolyn Dennis in 1986, six months after the birth of daughter Desiree. They were never pictured together and divorced after four years. News of their marriage only came to light in 2001.

Ruth Tyrangiel was with Dylan from 1974 to 1991 and was considered his common-law wife. Nowadays the old timer’s relationship status is as mysterious as his lyrics. But one thing seems to be for sure – Neil Young is still his buddy. halina.watts@ reachplc.com
