Piggies backed
PRESENTER Jimmy Doherty is on a crusade to protect farm animals and food standards.
A new agriculture Bill that was quietly passed paves the way for questionable US imports – so pig farmer Jimmy, whose new TV show starts tonight, is making a stand.
Jimmy, Jamie Oliver’s best mate, said: “If you eat meat, the life that animal leads must be of the highest standard.
“It’s important for the animal and, equally, animals that have a poor standard of life produce stressed meat and that isn’t great for you.”
Jimmy, 45, is backing the National Farmers’ Union’s petition to ensure imported food matches British standards. He is especially concerned about chlorinated chicken and poor-quality meat and eggs from the US flooding the market.
And he has animal welfare fears, too, such as the use of sow stalls, which restrict a pig’s movement. They are banned here but not in the US. Show your support by signing the petition at nfuonline.com. ■■Jimmy’s Forest starts today at 5.30pm on C4
