Simple changes to diet and lifestyle can help treat constipati­on, but it might take a few days or weeks before symptoms improve.

Start by changing your diet so your stools will be softer and easier to pass.

Drink plenty of fluids, avoid alcohol, increase fibre intake and add wheat bran, oats or linseed to your food.

Keep a regular time to go – try not to delay if the urge arises, and don’t feel rushed. Rest your feet on a stool while going if possible. A daily walk or run can also make you more regular.
