Town still in the fight

- By LIZ BYRNES at John Smith’s Stadium

DANNY COWLEY believes his Huddersfield side showed the unity and battling qualities to guide them to survival.

Neither side created any clear-cut chances until the final minutes when Preston could have snatched all three points.

Scott Sinclair pulled his shot wide before curling a free-kick beyond the post and Sean Maguire shot into the side-netting with the final kick.

Huddersfield stay 20th as they followed up the midweek win at Birmingham to make it four points from two games.

It left Preston six points off the playoffs as their poor form continued, with just two points from seven games.

Terriers boss Cowley said: “More unity, real strength, the coming together of the boys and, while we didn’t play at our best technically, we fought for each other and they are the qualities you are going to need in the last five games.”

He added: “It was an important point. Far from freeflowing, we weren’t able to play with the intensity at the top end of the pitch we’d have liked to.

“But when you don’t play well at the attacking end of the pitch, you have to keep the back door closed and we did that very well, I thought.”

Preston boss Alex Neil was pleased that his side kept a clean sheet, but felt they did not carry enough threat in front of goal.

He said: “I didn’t think there was a lot created in the game.

“We wanted to make sure that we competed and we wanted to make sure we kept a clean sheet.

“After losing the last two, we wanted to make sure we didn’t lose.”
