Leonard hits spot

- By JASON MELLOR at the KCOM Stadium

GARY ROWETT urged Millwall to quickly rediscover a few home comforts after breathing fresh life into their play-off bid.

Ryan Leonard’s wonder strike just 77 seconds in sealed only a second win since returning from the Covid-19 lockdown to cut the gap to sixth-place Cardiff to two points.

Millwall’s last four victories have all come on the road, with this latest one pushing Hull nearer to the drop. But Rowett’s men haven’t won on their own patch since mid-January – and two of their last three games are at home.

Rowett said: “This was a big win, a real war of attrition and the challenge is to try to dig out that win at home. “Without our fans, it’s a huge disadvantage. We seem to relax more away from home.”

Injury-hit midfielder Leonard had failed to find the net for 20 months – until this stunning 25-yard missile. Millwall could have been out of sight by the break, but let the toothless Tigers off the hook.

This latest set-back for Hull leaves Grant McCann’s men in the bottom three with crucial games against relegation rivals Wigan and Luton in the next seven days.

McCann reckons two wins from the last three games will be enough – but the problem is they’ve won just once in 17 attempts in the league since New Year’s Day.

The Hull boss said: “We’ve made a habit of conceding early. The first half wasn’t good enough, but we know what we need to do to stay in this division and I believe we’ll get over the line.”
