Time to Scotland with grand designs

- By CHERYL MCEVOY

Wpositioned to look out over the estate’s magnificent grounds. The luxurious feel continues into the other four bedrooms and to the adjacent three-bedroom cottage, which also has its own kitchen and split-level living area.

Back downstairs there’s a separate cosy television room, with a full Sky TV package for when that weather closes in.

And down the hall, the biggest hit of the weekend for us – an enormous games room with its own billiard table.

Outside there are two hot tubs and a cute hobbit hut complete with indoor barbecue.

There’s also a generous enclosed garden area next to the terrace, with a boules court and small putting green, perfect for the children during the summer break.

But we were happy to have an excuse to simply enjoy the house’s luxury – we loved it so much we’re planning a return visit soon with extended family.

Castleton accommodates up to 18 people and is perfect for a family get-together or extravagant wedding.

In fact its new owners were married there last year with a fabulous marquee in ECLECTIC STYLE Great mix of decor

the eight-acre grounds. Set in the glorious Strathmore countryside between Angus and Perthshire, it’s a 90-minute drive from Glasgow and slightly less from Edinburgh – so it’s perfectly positioned for exploring the rich cultural and sporting attractions that surround it.

It’s hard to find something not to love about this gem. hen you live next to a royal estate, keeping up with the neighbours isn’t a task you can take lightly.

But Castleton House stands every bit as proudly and elegantly as next-door Glamis Castle, the former home of the late Queen Mother.

In the middle of one of the worst storms of the past five years, the stunning Edwardian mansion was a safe haven in which to enjoy playing lady of the manor for a long weekend.

Walking through the front door, we were awestruck by the grand staircase that dominates an impressive hallway.

Renovated to an exceptional standard, the house oozes style with an eclectic mix of antiques and modern art adorning every exquisitely decorated room.

And amid the fivestar luxury, there’s a warmth to Castleton that belies its grandeur, making you feel instantly at home.

A spectacular formal dining room leads into a fantastic kitchen, the best equipped I’ve ever enjoyed on a selfcatering holiday.

We needn’t have bothered lugging the boot full of cook’s essentials up there with us – they were already in ample supply at the house.

The main house has six spectacular bedrooms, each individually styled with huge beds, sumptuous furnishings and en suites to die for.

Two stand out as masters, with walk-in showers and elegant slipper baths
