A HOJB’S AS GOOD AS A WINKS

TOTTENHAM’S pursuit of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has cast doubts on Harry Winks’ future at the club.

Spurs and Everton are both chasing Southampton’s £25million-rated, Denmark midfielder Hojbjerg.

And should Jose Mourinho beat Carlo Ancelotti to his signature, Winks is the most likely player to leave Spurs.

Winks, 24, is valued between £25m and £30m, but has been in and out of

HARRY KANE will be keeping a close eye on Tottenham’s failure to spend big on premium quality players as he ponders his future.

That is the warning to Spurs fans from former White Hart Lane star Dimitar Berbatov, who himself had to leave the club to satisfy his appetite for trophies.

Betfair ambassador Berbatov said: “At Spurs, there is a lack of transfer activity and people may say that there has been a lack of quality brought into the club in recent times.

“That will be in Kane’s mind. People are talking a lot about this and Kane is probably talking about it to his agent as well.

“If you are a player with big ambitions, you always have things like this in your mind.

“If you want to win something and time is flying and not waiting for anyone, you know you have limited opportunities to win something in your career.

“So then it’s down to you to make a decision about exactly what you are going to do about it – if you stay or if you go.

“Trust me, that’s a tough decision and I’m sure that in the case of Harry, who has come through the academy, it will be an even tougher decision.”

Spurs, who face Leicester today, didn’t sign a single player ahead of or during the 2018-19 season.

And only January recruit Steven Bergwijn, of the three who have come in since last summer, has hit the ground running.

Club-record buy Tanguy Ndombele has had a miserable year and loan signing Gedson

Fernandes has found opportunities limited.

Berbatov (right) added: “Daniel Levy is a great businessman and knows how to get the best out of the market, but there comes a time when you need to spend a bit more.

“They did bring in Ndombele and Fernandes, but they aren’t playing regularly enough for the money they spent. Maybe they have struggled to adjust.

“They need to be more precise when they spend big money, they need to spend it on players that deserve it.

“Spurs do better buying players for less money who turn out great because when they spend lots of money on players, they don’t play enough.”

As well as the £53.8million the team under Mourinho. And with funds limited at Tottenham this summer, owner Daniel Levy will have to balance the books if he is to bring in the signings his manager wants.

Spurs right-back Kyle Walker-Peters, who has spent the second half of the season on loan at St Mary’s, could form part of a deal for Hojbjerg.

But the Saints are yet to confirm whether or not they want to take Walker-Peters on permanently. lavished on Ndombele, axing Mauricio Pochettino and his staff and replacing them with Jose Mourinho and his team, cost Spurs a pretty penny.

And while results have improved slightly on the start of the season, they are still inconsistent under the Portuguese.

Mourinho’s style of play has also been heavily criticised by some fans and plenty fear he won’t play to Kane’s strengths. But Berbatov said: “I see some people saying Kane won’t score as many goals playing under Mourinho – and that isn’t good for Jose.

“Overall, though, I don’t think we should be worried yet. I’m sure he’ll be talking with Kane and the other players about his plans and what he wants to get out of them.

“I can understand why people may see playing under Mourinho frustrating for a striker, but I also saw the press conference with Jose, where he listed all the great forwards he has worked with and their goalscoring records under him, which was pretty impressive.

“Ultimately, as a forward like Kane, if you have something to say, go and speak to him and tell him, ‘Boss, I feel isolated upfront and I don’t get enough of the ball’.

“If I was playing under Mourinho, I would enjoy it and if I wasn’t happy, I would go and speak to him because I know he is open and honest.

“I’m sure he would say, ‘Well, Berbs, that’s the situation under me and that’s how we play’ – so at least I would know where I stand.”
