Wellied Wills ate jellied eels as he battled monster hangover

- BY RUSSELL MYERS Royal Editor

PRINCE William has told how he got wellied then tried to cure a hangover by eating the Cockney favourite jellied eels.

Wills’ revelation came as he chatted with former rough sleepers. Gary Griffiths, who used to live in his truck, asked him: “Excuse me Sir, have you lost weight?”

The prince replied: “I’m worried now where you’re looking at, do I look like I’ve lost weight? Around the jowls maybe, have lost a bit a weight up here, around the chin? Maybe lockdown hasn’t been quite so (bad).”

Revealing the exchange later, roofer Gary, 55, explained: “I said ‘you need a bit of pie and mash in you, fatten you up a bit’ and he said ‘Don’t, I ate jellied eels on a hangover, after a bender’ – which I thought was quite good.”

The slithery dish has been an East End favourite since the 18th century. Gary, who helped restore Windsor Castle after the fire of 1992, is among those helped by the Light Project Peterborough.

William, 38, visited as part of a mission to end homelessness – a cause championed by his late mother Diana. He said: “This pandemic has been truly horrendous for everyone. I’m really hoping slivers of positivity and goodness come out of this... you’ll never have a better chance nationally to crack homelessness.” Jellied eels

The Government has helped homeless off the streets in the pandemic – and pledged an extra £85million for permanent homes.

William also met members of the Safer off the Streets partnership. He referred to New York buying up hotels to house the homeless and said: “We’ve just got to be a bit brave, a bit bold to get it done.”
