PC Harper’s grandmothe­r Maureen, 77, added: “We’ve tried to be there for the whole family but it has been difficult. We all just want to get justice.

“Andrew was the perfect grandson. He should have gone home that night and been off-duty but he took the extra job.

“We’ve got pictures of him everywhere – I can’t bear to put them away. He was our first grandson and he meant the world to us. He was the most lovely guy.

“All he ever wanted to do was protect and help people. If he wasn’t a policeman, he would have served in the Army. He just wanted to look after people. That’s the man he was.”

Maureen and Cyril, who celebrate their 60th wedding anniversar­y next year, revealed they visited the rural road where their grandson died.

They went to the grim spot with their daughter Debbie, PC Harper’s mum.

Cyril said: “We had to do it for our peace of mind and see it for ourselves.

“On the news it looked like a small lane. It was only when we got there we realised just how long and winding the road was. It was heartbreak­ing.”

At their home in Slough, Berks, where they are surrounded by photos of PC Harper in his uniform, Cyril added: “We will never forgive them. He was a special guy and they took his life away.

“Whether they meant to kill him or not, they should have been done for murder. They had no respect for the law and no respect for the police.”

PC Harper, who worked for Thames Valley Police, had finished his shift last August 15 but took on one more job after
