Salvage summer with a staycation

-

I know I am lucky in so many ways and pre-Covid, I would have been fortunate enough to be on an overseas holiday at the moment.

However, my family decided a while back that it was probably safer not to travel abroad.

No one really knows how big or small the risks are and my cancer drugs are also a slight concern – but the main reason for holidaying in Great Britain was to make sure we put something back into the economy.

We realise how much the country needs it right now, and there are so many amazing places to visit on our very own doorsteps.

This week, we ended up in a village called Kingsdon in Somerset and were blessed with wonderful weather.

We visited some beautiful places and, as ever, I went out running each morning along unspoilt, deserted trails that were completely new to me.

Every day, we headed out to explore the area and saw the lighthouse at

Portland Bill and the beaches at Weymouth, Seaton and Burnham-on-Sea.

We drank cider at Perry’s Cider Mills – buying a fair few bottles to sample at home, too – climbed the Tor at Glastonbury and walked up Cheddar Gorge where, of course, we sampled and bought some of the fabulous cheese.

As I said at the start of this column, I am so lucky to be able to live life to the full – especially as I was expected to have fallen victim to prostate cancer by now.

The time spent with family and friends this week has been priceless.

I hope that you too are able to make the most of the time in the UK this summer, enjoying what we have and putting something back, if you can. Until next week,

Kev
