Alan Sugar-free

He opens bakery but worries about his bottom line

-

It’s Sugar by name but not by nature, as the Apprentice chief vows to stay off the sweet treats despite opening a new bakery business.

Lord Alan Sugar is making dough with show winner Carina Lepore after opening a second premises this week.

But he confesses to not eating his own goodies, fearing for his waistline.

“I can’t eat too much of that stuff,” says the multi-millionaire, cutting the ribbon on Dough Bakehouse in Beckenham, South East London.

“I’ve got to watch my weight – I’d eat the bloody lot left here on my own! I’m more of a savoury person so the sausage rolls are up my street.” While much of Britain found them

selves trying to beg, borrow or steal flour and yeast as shops emptied, Sugar, 73, says he had no such worries. “I didn’t try any baking out in lockdown,” he admits.

After shelving this year’s Apprentice due to Covid, Lord Sugar says he’s confident he’ll be back next year to dish out his famous “You’re fired” catchphrase.

He says: “Hopefully we’re going to start the normal schedule next year. I can’t wait to get back – I’ve missed it.”

To whet our appetites before then, next month the BBC will run a sixepisode special looking back at the past 15 years of the hit series.

He says: “I’ve wanted to do it for a while. There’s been so many highlights, great characters, success stories. It’s a great series.”

Despite his stern exterior, Sugar has been a beacon of hope in the pandemic, choosing to focus on the positives – frequently going head- to- head with Piers Morgan over the Good Morning Britain host’s bleak outlook.

He says: “It’s all about himself when it comes to Piers. He’s gone mad.

“We’ve got to stop having a go at the Government. It’s important to be optimistic – someone needs to be.”
