I’ve had virtually the best of times

-

Last week I should have shared two joyous occasions in person – but Covid-19 has yet again reared its ugly head and changed things.

My brother-in-law moved to Canada years ago and his eldest, Alexandra, got married this week. My wife and I were really looking forward to it.

The wedding was planned over a year ago and everyone was excited about a big bash but, sadly, restrictions in Canada are similar to those in the UK so we had to watch online instead.

I am glad they didn’t delay the wedding because weddings should be about love.

But I am sad for them for not being able to share their special day in the usual way.

The other virtual occasion was the award by the Lord Mayor of London to my friend Nick Butter – the only person to run a marathon in all of the world’s 196 countries.

He became a Freeman of the City of London.

Being a patriot, I always set great store in anything that is part of the traditional fabric of the country – it’s what helps make Britain great.

It was so fitting that Nick received the honour for his amazing achievement and raising funds for my favourite charity, Prostate Cancer UK.

The ceremony will be something else amazing we can read about in his book, Running The World, when it is published later this year.

But I know it would have been much more special for him if it had been held, with all the proper regalia, at Mansion House.

I enjoyed being a virtual guest at both events. For me they epitomise how we must behave now: Don’t delay things that should happen and make the most of what you can within the guidelines.

I hope that, for you, the show must go on too, even if it is in a different way.

Until next week,

Kev
