Teddy Sheringham by scoring in the first game of the season for a fourth successive year.

He has now hit 97 goals in just 154 games for the Reds – and is on course to become the third-fastest Liverpool player to rack up a century of goals behind Kop legend Roger Hunt and Jack Parkinson.

Klopp added: “Three more goals – but his all-round performance was exceptional.

“He doesn’t just score goals, but he has scored with two penalties and also scored with a sensational finish.

“He was constantly pressing for us and causing Leeds problems.

“Mo should be proud. It is very special to have him – and long may it continue.”

Salah started and finished the game by scoring from the spot.

There was controversy about his opener because referee Michael Oliver’s decision was confirmed by VAR official Paul Tierney, despite the ball striking Robin Koch’s hand after bouncing up off his thigh.

By the letter of the law, it should not have been given.

Virgil van Dijk also got on the scoresheet, but Marcelo Bielsa’s side hit back bravely to level three times through Jack Harrison, Patrick Bamford and Mateusz Klich.

Then Leeds’ new £35million club-record signing Rodrigo barged over Fabinho to enable Salah to clinch victory.

Bielsa refused to let Spanish international Rodrigo carry the can.

He said: “There is no direct relationship between the foul by Rodrigo and the result.

“You can’t put the blame on the error one player made.

“Prior to the penalty Liverpool had chances to score also so it didn’t necessarily have to come from the penalty.”
