Owls Pul up short

- By ROSS HEPPENSTALL at Hillsborough

TONY PULIS is desperate to bring in reinforcements after the nightmare of relegation crept into clearer focus.

It is now seven games without a win for rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday since Pulis took control a month ago.

The 62-year-old (above) has never been relegated as a manager but admits new faces are needed.

To compound Wednesday’s woes, defender Dominic Iorfa ruptured an Achilles and faces six months out.

Pulis said: “We have got to bring players in with a little more quality and know-how. This is the most disjointed squad I’ve had as a manger.

“Losing Dominic is a massive blow. He has looked like a Rolls-Royce in training but will be having an operation either on Monday or Tuesday.”

Wednesday had the perfect start when Josh Windass latched on to Barry Bannan’s pass and fired past Jack Walton.

From there, Barnsley were impressive, Cauley Woodrow heading home on 14 minutes. And before the break, Dominik Frieser finished neatly past Joe Wildsmith to cap a delightful passing move.

The Owls improved after the interval and Walton denied Kadeem Harris and Windass. Good fortune then saved the Tykes as substitute Joey Pelupessy struck the bar from 30 yards and the ball hit Walton and the post before Barnsley scrambled to safety.

Success marked the Tykes’ first victory over Wednesday since 2009, and boss Valerien Ismael admitted: “I knew the meaning of this game and could feel it in the changing room with these guys, so it’s a big win.”
