Fam’s the third man

- By RICHARD LATHAM at Ashton Gate

SUPERSUB Famara Diedhiou earned the gratitude of Bristol City boss Dean Holden by scoring the winner – for a third time this season.

And what a goal it was.

There seemed little danger when another replacement, Opi Edwards, controlled the ball inside the box on 87 minutes.

But Diedhiou suddenly took command, moving forward to unleash an unstoppable right-footed drive from 12 yards that rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

Chris Martin had headed City in front from the impressive Callum O’Dowda’s 23rd-minute cross.

But it was no more than Wycombe deserved when Garath McCleary fired a 68th-minute equaliser with the help of a wicked deflection.

After four defeats in five games, a relieved Holden said: “It was an outstanding strike by

Famara at the end of a very good move. That’s three times he has grabbed the winner for us as a sub this season, which speaks volumes for his attitude.“

While Wycombe looked the more threatening side for much of the game, it was City who created the clearer chances.

Martin, Nahki Wells and Antoine Semenyo all failed to score with only keeper Ryan Allsop to beat, before Diedhiou showed them how to do it.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth nevertheless had cause to be proud of his basement team.

“We looked the only team likely to win after equalising, but again we have paid for minor errors,” he said.
