A title for Spurs is Dun deal

- RICHARD EDWARDS

DAYS JOHN BY Duncan says Spurs are title possibles

BRAMALL LANE is the last ground away-day flops Spurs want to see looming into view.

Jose Mourinho’s men, who haven’t won on the road since November 8, have a shocking record at Sheffield United.

Their last league win there was way back in December 1975.

Margaret Thatcher had just been elected leader of the Conservative Party, a loaf of bread cost 10p, and Jaws had just been released at the cinema.

John Duncan scored both goals in a 2-0 win for the visitors 46 years ago.

And despite their poor form of late — one win in their last five matches — Duncan says Spurs fans should still be dreaming of a first title since 1961.

“Terry Neill was the manager when we last won there,” Duncan said. “Funnily enough I seem to remember us having a pretty good record there up to that point.

“The supporters still had the expectation back then that we would be challenging for the title, particularly with the history that the club had.

“But they can challenge this season.

“Spurs have done really well so far.

“They are already in the League Cup final and they were top of the table for a time. I don’t care what people say, if you’re top of the table then you deserve to be there.

“They have slipped in recent weeks but why can’t the fans dream of winning the league?”

In the first year of the Premier League, Blades dished out a 6-0 hammering to a Spurs side containing the likes of Darren Anderton and Teddy Sheringham.

That remains their second-worst defeat in the Premier League, and Duncan says today’s challenge is a tough one for Mourinho’s men.

“Sheffield United are brilliantly managed and their results don’t necessarily reflect their performance,” he said.
