ODEJAYI KNOWS WHAT IT’S LIKE TO KAYO BLUES

Barnsley v Chelsea

THE striker who famously dumped Chelsea out of the FA Cup 13 years ago is happy to bring the upset to the attention of new Blues boss Thomas Tuchel.

Kayode Odejayi wrote himself into Barnsley folklore when his towering header secured a 1-0 quarter-final win over Avram Grant’s FA Cup holders in March 2008.

Tuchel’s first taste of the FA Cup will come in South Yorkshire when he takes Chelsea to face Valerien Ismael’s Championship play-off hopefuls on Thursday.

Odejayi, now retired, said: “I’m pleased to see Barnsley doing well this season and it’s great to be playing Chelsea again.

“The atmosphere when we beat them was unbelievable with 22,410 fans inside Oakwell, so I’m just gutted this game will be played in front of empty stands.

“The fans really were our 12th man in 2008. Chelsea rested Frank

Lampard but still had players like John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho, Michael Ballack and Nicolas Anelka.

“That magnified the size of the result, especially as we were struggling in the league that season.

“When Barnsley drew Chelsea recently, someone sent me YouTube footage of my goal in 2008 and it was nice to watch it back again.”

Under Simon Davey, the unfashionable Tykes won 2-1 at

Liverpool in the previous round before putting Chelsea to the sword in the last eight.

Odejayo, 38, added: “As a club, Barnsley have never had huge resources, so we were massively punching above our weight in the FA Cup that year.

“Chelsea were very amicable in defeat afterwards. I got John Terry’s shirt and he got it signed for me by all their players.”

The Tykes fairytale ended when they lost 1-0 to Cardiff at Wembley in the semi-finals.
