SWP: It was my job to Ague-ruin it for City!

- BY SIMON MULLOCK

SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS had always wanted to be on the pitch when Manchester City became champions – and he was.

The only problem was that the former England winger had departed the Etihad and was playing for QPR when he witnessed Sergio Aguero score the goal that announced the emergence of another Premier League superpower.

It is often forgotten that on that May day in 2012, Rangers were scrapping for their own survival, which was only secured by a Bolton draw at Stoke – just before Aguero famously swung his right boot to secure City the most dramatic of late victories.

And Wright-Phillips said: “City fans probably won’t like me saying this, because I am one of them, but I was giving it 100 per cent for QPR to win the game.

“We needed to win to be certain of staying up. People have asked me if we knew we were safe before Aguero’s goal went in – but we honestly didn’t.

“The place was going crazy and even if our bench knew that Bolton had drawn, none of the players did. In the end, it was the perfect day for me – City were champions and QPR were safe.

“But I was giving it absolutely everything to win the game.”

Within days of returning to Manchester after three years spent with Chelsea, WrightPhillips knew it was City’s destiny to become the club they now are.

He had just scored twice in his second debut for the club – a 3-0 win at Sunderland – when it was announced that Sheikh Mansour had completed a takeover.

Wright-Phillips recalled: “When I came back to City, I didn’t have a clue about the takeover. When I scored twice against Sunderland, it felt like I had come home.

“Then it all went crazy. The takeover went through and suddenly we were signing Robinho.

“Obviously, the club has changed beyond all recognition, but the thing that people on the outside didn’t seem to understand was that it was never just a case of the owners spending loads of money.

“Every change was made with a long-term plan in place – and that’s why City have probably been the best club in the country for the past 10 years.”
