Clarke-Harris is man on the spot as leaders Boro stage comeback

- By MIKE RIMMER at the Weston Homes Stadium

DARREN FERGUSON hailed his comeback kings as Peterborough powered clear at the summit.

Leading scorer Jonson Clarke-Harris roared to the rescue with a vital late double as Ferguson’s men snatched a sixth successive victory from the jaws of defeat.

The lowly Latics were more than a match for their high-flying hosts and sensed a victory to climb out of the drop zone when substitute Thelo Aasgaard caught out Posh keeper Christy Pym direct from a 72ndminute corner. Ferguson “That was a fantastic three points for us.

“All we need to do is focus on winning as many games as we possibly can – and this was an important one.

“It was a very different kind of victory because we were a little under par and found ourselves behind to a freak of a goal.

“But the way we responded was brilliant.

“The quality of the goal to equalise was superb and there is no doubt it was definitely a penalty for the winner. It was great character from everyone to come from behind in the way we did because Wigan came here and had a right go at us.”

Caretaker Wigan boss Leam Richardson was left to lick his wounds again after suffering heartbreak at the hands of the team sitting top of League One for the second successive Saturday.

Richardson, whose men were pipped by Lincoln the previous weeksaid: end, was annoyed by the decision to award the crucial penalty to Posh but also took considerable pride from the pain of seeing more precious points slip away.

He said: “With the effort levels and application that went into the performance, we can feel hard done by.

“We were a threat from set-pieces all day and Thelo managed to score from the corner to give us the lead but we haven’t got our just rewards and that is disappointing.”

MARK BECK’S first league goal since September 2019 earned Harrogate victory. He ended his 27-game drought with a fine header to hand Grimsby a seventh straight road loss.

Harrogate boss Simon Weaver said: “He’s a good centre forward with a lot of ability who just needed a bit of luck.”

Grimsby boss Paul Hurst said: “I thought we looked the more likely winners.”

Scottish Round-Up

CELTIC made a winning start to life after Neil Lennon with a 1-0 win over ABERDEEN.

Interim boss John Kennedy – who stepped in after Lennon quit the

Bhoys last Wednesday – masterminded a victory thanks to Odsonne Edouard’s early deflected strike off Tommie Hoban.

Celtic’s win keeps runaway leaders Rangers seven points from the title after a week of turmoil for the Hoops.

And Kennedy said: “We started positive, played well and pushed Aberdeen back.

“We scored a good goal and had a few good chances but when you don’t get that second goal it changes the game.

“We knew Aberdeen would come after us and probably didn’t respond well enough.

“We gave the ball away too much in the second half in areas we shouldn’t and when the game is stretched it doesn’t suit us.

“But credit to the players in the way they defended the box and dealt with the pressure.”

Aberdeen created little before Niall McGinn’s corner found Ash Taylor at the back post. The defender’s header looked to be going in but Partyk Klimala was on the line to clear the danger.

It was a disappointing day for the visitors as they failed to close the gap on third-place HIBERNIAN, who slipped up 2-0 against MOTHERWELL.

Jordan Roberts inspired Well to victory with a goal and an assist.

The forward, who is on loan from Hibs’ city rivals Hearts, opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a calm finish.

Roberts then set up Devante Cole to add another within a minute of the second half.

Zech Medley scored KILMARNOCK’S first goal in 571 minutes to end an eight-game losing streak in a 1-1 draw against DUNDEE UNITED.
